It’s easy if you just make it up all as you go along
A weird quote from a right-wing blogger, found at Talking Points Memo, The Importance of Being Earnest:
Obama thinks he is a good talker, but he is often undisciplined when he speaks. He needs to understand that as President, his words will be scrutinized and will have impact whether he intends it or not. In this regard, President Bush is an excellent model; Obama should take a lesson from his example. Bush never gets sloppy when he is speaking publicly. He chooses his words with care and precision, which is why his style sometimes seems halting. In the eight years he has been President, it is remarkable how few gaffes or verbal blunders he has committed. If Obama doesn’t raise his standards, he will exceed Bush’s total before he is inaugurated.
“We’ve got a lot of relations with countries in our neighborhood.” –George W. Bush, Kranj, Slovenia, June 10, 2008. Of course we do.
“I’ll be long gone before some smart person ever figures out what happened inside this Oval Office.” –George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., May 12, 2008. Hm. Maybe not.
“So long as I’m the president, my measure of success is victory — and success.” –George W. Bush, on Iraq, Washington, D.C., April 17, 2008. Wait. What?
And that’s just 2008. What about old favorites:
“They want the federal government controlling Social Security like it’s some kind of federal program.” –George W. Bush, Nov. 2, 2000. Wouldn’t want that.
“You know, one of the hardest parts of my job is to connect Iraq to the war on terror.” –interview with CBS News’ Katie Couric, Sept. 6, 2006. You don’t say.
“I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully.” –Saginaw, Mich., Sept. 29, 2000. We’ve been wondering about this one for years.
“I just want you to know that, when we talk about war, we’re really talking about peace.” –Washington, D.C. June 18, 2002. Good you cleared that up.
“Rarely is the questioned asked: Is our children learning?” –Florence, South Carolina, Jan. 11, 2000. A very rare question, indeed.
Obama’s going to have to work very hard to top this.
