A bad egg?
May 16th
I had some eggs that were going to expire, so I decided to boil them before they went bad. When I put them in the water, however, I noticed they were were standing big-end up. Weird!
Had they gone bad? I checked Google and learned they were still edible. According to this article on Why do eggs float?:
Old eggs float in fresh cold water because of a large air cell that forms as the egg cools after being laid. As the egg ages, air enters the egg and the air cell becomes larger and this acts as a buoyancy aid.
Sounded good to me, but as another reader pointed out, this explanation isn’t quite right:
You are partially correct, however, it is not the fact that air is getting into the egg that makes it float. It is the fact that mass is leaving the egg.
So the moral of this tale is don’t eat eggs which are completely floating and remember density determines whether something will float.
Cutting Bagels the Geeky Way

It’s easy enough to slice a bagel. Cutting them so that the holes link together is another is somewhat harder.
I like food
Nov 7th
I’m really into food these days.
I roast a chicken a couple of times a a month. The How To: Roast a Chicken recipe posted at Chicagoist looks good, though my normal recipe is more like the one described in the last comment.
It’s easy to assume that all McDonald’s everywhere will have the exact same menu, but there’s actually a lot of local variation. Weird Food McDonald’s Sells Around The World points out a few of them. We aw Teriyaki Chicken Sandwiches in Hawaii.
The food obsession has led to a lot of baking and ice cream making, so I’m looking for sugar alternatives. This Baking with Truvia? question at Ask Metafilter is helpful.
But even with my current baking/iPhone obsessions, I still haven’t made anything like this awesome iPhone wedding cake.
